As many of you know, I was recently invited into the family of BERNINA as an Ambassador, read more about it here. As a BERNINA Ambassador, I was invited to their 125th Anniversary celebration and annual dealer convention, BERNINA University 2018. Depending on your role in the company, BU, means different things. Today I’m going to share with you all about my journey in preparation, travel, teaching, learning and having a booth at BERNINA University 2018 and most importantly, what new things I’ve designed for you!
BERNINA Giant Machine!
To celebrate the 125th Anniversary, BERNINA created this amazing giant BERNINA 880 machine. Read the We All Sew blog all about it. It was awesome during my lunch break on Saturday to get a chance and see it. My first thought, it was overwhelming. My second thought, wish I had a hoop to fit that space. Follow the hashtag #BERNINA125 on social media for all the pictures and funny stories.
BERNINA UNIVERSITY 2018 Preparation
To prepare for a week long event out of state, for me, takes about two solid months.
- First is partnering with fabric companies
- Designing new products, designs and projects
- Making the prototypes
- Stitching final samples
- Creating covers
- Writing instructions
- Creating a class to teach
- Designing the booth layout
- Arranging travel
- and continue with normal business and family life
Heidi painted all of my round buttons
Below are a few examples of partnering with fabric designers and using their fabric to inspire the final project.
Fabric from Alison Glass.
There is quiet a lot involved and the only bad part is…I can’t share it with my fans! Secret sewing is all I’ve been doing for two months now. If you follow me on Instagram and Facebook then you’ve seen snippets, but not the final projects! I’m excited to share with you the eleven, 11, new patterns and design sets I launched at BERNINA UNIVERSITY 2018.
What is BERNINA UNIVERSITY 2018
BERNINA UNIVERSITY 2018 is the annual BERNINA Dealer convention. Shop owners from all over the world come to see new machines, new product, take classes (like my class below), eat good, have fun and go home with excellent information to share with their customers.
BERNINA UNIVERSITY 2018 Ambassador training
Because I’m a BERNINA Ambassador, I was invited for a mini Ambassador education course. It was fantastic for me because usually I’m the one teaching, so this was a real treat! I took classes on presser feet, embroidery, social media, the technical end of the BERNINA machines and really why they are the most precise machines on the market and more. Here are just a few of the pictures I snapped while my teachers were infusing all my new knowledge. My morning teachers were Susan Fears on the new BERNINA 590, an amazing machine and extremely affordable. It’s a sewing and embroidery machine. It sorta reminded me of my BERNINA 790 Plus younger sister. Plus it has a fancy new thread cutter on the RIGHT side of the needle. Check it out. Oh and P.S. I heard we can order it for our current BERNINA machines, so ask your local dealer.
Fancy new stitches exclusive to the BERNINA 590. We had some fun stitching out.
Susan Beck, the author of the Big Book of Feet, walked us through several of the feet and attachments. She explained why, how and what to use the feet for. I could of stayed in there all day. For fun watch the video on how the BERNINA feet are made.
BERNINA Ambassador Class continues
The afternoon was filled with excellent learning opportunities and great memories. HP, 4th generation and current owner of BERNINA, gave us a nice welcome lunch with encouraging words for the future.
After noon presenters were the folks who make BERNINA great. What an honor to learn from the best!
- Connie Fanders, Director of Education
- Hans Herzog, innovation & Technical Training manager
- Alice Voss-Kantor, Marketing Manager
- Debbie Caccimani, Product and Sales Trainer
These amazing talented folks spent their valuable time guiding us on the in’s and out’s of our lovely BERNINA machines.
For those of you who are on social media, you might have friends who seem closer to you then your real life friends. For me, it’s the same. I work from home and rarely socialize, I don’t want to say the word hermit…but I sorta am one. Here are just a few of the friends I only see once or twice a year and others I’ve worked with but never really had the chance to meet in real life. To me, these are the moments of BERNINA University 2018 I will most remember.

My booth and new projects!
Setting up a booth all by yourself and being under 5 foot is tricky, that’s why it’s important to have lots of tall friends (thank you Linda McGhee for your help). Here is a tour around the booth and all my new patterns below. Stay tuned for the announcement of all the new In the Hoop project CDs and Enchanted Embroidery Designs. These will be exclusive to shops so contact your local dealer and let them know you want to order some of the new projects!
Outfits for BERNINA University 2018
Almost next to never do I buy new clothing for myself, but Heidi, my 9 year old, informed me I needed new clothing. Her and I went shopping to find some new and improved pieces and there was a theme…can you sense it? Pink and Polished she called it! If you look closely you can spot the new shoes too. I am pleased to say I set a budget for new clothing and went far under it. Heidi again informed me, that extra money could go towards Barbie Dolls for her 🙂 Kids!!
Closing ceremonies at BERNINA University 2018
As the week came to an end we were all filled with education, ideas and most everyone I spoke to was excited about the new things coming soon. Closing ceremonies was a huge celebration. BERNINA celebrates their top dealers nationwide, celebrates with amazing food, dancing and music. We were honored to have the legendary Ricky Tims as our host and entertainment. He played a few original songs, told some funny stories and left us with some great memories and thoughts.
What’s next for Sue?
With BERNINA University passed what is next? I’ve got to finish up the new line of patterns, fill the orders from shops and then prepare for the next large show in October, Houston Fall Quilt Market, early November. I also have one event I will be traveling to in Ohio, Somewhere Sewing, sign up if you’re local.
Stay tuned for other fun new In the Hoop projects, creations and exciting news! BERNINA University 2019 #BU2019, will be a lot closer to home next year. It will be in Jacksonville Florida. Not sure if I will be teaching, have a booth or invited, but I can say it was a great time this year and I can only hope I get the privilege to join BERNINA for BERNINA University 2019!!
