Not sure about you, but in this family we use eye mask all the time. There are at least 3-4 eye mask downstairs and 3-4 upstairs. I’m convinced that my love of eye mask began while I was pregnant. The reality of knowing that soon my nights would be filled with nursing and my days would consist of mini naps. This was the beginning of my Eye Mask in the Hoop collection. Years later my little girl is growing fast and eye mask are still apart of our daily lives.
Being creative for me means finding new ways to push my machine and what can be developed in the hoop. I was recently given three flannel cuts of brand new fabric by Patty Young, designer for Mod Kid Boutique. Her line of fabric Acorn Alley by Riley Blake is stunning. The colors, the softness, and the quality is perfection.
First of all I am in love with the colors, secondly the prints are adorable and third I am totally digging that she designed this fabric for Knit and Flannel. When I think of Flannel I think of Chenille! So when I told Patty that I was in love with her new line and wanted to create something with the flannel I knew this was the time to bring my love of Eye Mask and Chenille together.
Lets get started and have some fun creating an In the Hoop Chenille Eye Mask.
Tools:
- 5×7 hoop
- Laundry bag
- Painters tape
- Chenille Brush or Tooth brush
- Hand sewing needle
- Embroidery needle 90/14 *Used Schmetz 90/14
- Ruler
- Mat
- Rotary cutter
- Chenille rotary cutter *Used Clover Slash 28mm rotary cutter
- 5″ scissors
- Fabric sheers
Materials:
- 1/3 yd Flannel: *Used Acorn Valley Main Citron In Flannel
- (4) Identical 6-1/2″x8″ cuts
- (1) Back 6-1/2″x8″
- 13″ – Elastic *Used Dritz Ruffle Elastic
- (1) piece of Batting to fit hoop
- Sewing thread *Used Aurifil wt 50
- Empty bobbin
Step 1:
Hoop batting – wind matching bobbin with thread (thread machine) and insert new needle.
Step 2:
Place (1) piece of flannel, right side up, centered within width and height of hoop.
*Note: Pay attention to the direction of the fabric in respect to the design.
Insert hoop into machine and sew Stitch #1, which is a basting stitch to secure the material in place.
Step 3:
Remove hoop from machine but do not remove materials from hoop.
Place the remaining (3) identical flannel pieces directly over top of the first one.
Use painters tape to secure in place.
Step 4:
Insert hoop into machine and sew Stitch #2.
Step 5:
Remove hoop from machine but do not remove materials from hoop.
Place on a cutting mat. On the top three (3) layers, cut in between the rows with the 5″ scissors (not shown). This will help once using the slash rotary cutter.
Insert the slashing point on the slash rotary cutter under the top three layers, but above the bottom first layer. Hold down the materials and cut.
Step 6:
Place the elastic centered within width. Place ends on top and bottom, tape to secure in place. Fold up the center and place a piece of tape to secure.
Step 7:
Place the Back, right sides together, over the front. Tape in place to secure as desired.
Insert hoop into machine and sew Stitch #3. Once finished stitching remove hoop from machine and remove materials from hoop.
Step 8:
Cut 1/4″ around eye mask and 1/2″ on opening.
Hand stitch opening closed.
Step 9:
Use toothbrush or Chenille brush to fluff up and create the texture of the Chenille. I like to call this, fluffing the fabric.
Put chenille eye mask in a laundry bag and into dryer for 5-10 minutes.
Once finished in dryer, remove eye mask from bag and brush one last time.
WEAR and sleep well.

YEAH!! So glad you like. Please send pictures of what yours comes out like
Okay… I wonder if my three year olds would wear one. Their bedroom faces the sunrise and they are up with the sun. It may be worth a try. Your post also makes me feel like I may need to grab a few more sewing tools, thank you for that. ☺️
These are great! My child has been wearing one since she was two or three. The house is bright and light comes in all day long, this made naps easier and relaxation. If your three year old doesn’t wear it, then you have a perfect SPA gift for a friend.
Hi Sue,
I wish I would’ve have seen this post a while ago so I can give this design a try! I just purchased a boring ugly sleep mask for my hubby a couple of days ago for his birthday. This design looks so much fun and looks like it covers a whole lot better too.
It’s super cute!
Thanks for sharing,
Lillian
