How to make an In The Hoop Flower Earbud case
Not sure about you, but my earbuds end up all knotted and messy at the bottom of my purse. Recently while traveling, I found an old business card and wrapped the earbuds around it for the entire trip. Though the glob of earbuds/business card wasn’t pretty, it sure was functional. This got me thinking, and I said to myself, “Sue, you need to design an earbud case with three basic requirements; one – Pretty, two – functional and three – it must be easy and fast to make”.
Well my friends, I have created just that. A Pretty, functional, and fast to make earbud case. Below are some written instructions and a video to help you create your very own. Find the design here.
Make lots and lots of them. Use different materials, post pictures on my social media and share this blog post with your stitching friends!!
- 4″x4″ Hoop
- Clear tape
- Snap tool set and Awl (used K1 stand from KamSnaps)
- Snap tool base (highly recommend from GG Designs in Wood)
- Iron with steam
- Embroidery 75/11 needles (used Schmetz)
- Fray check (optional)
- Embroidery thread and empty bobbin
- (1) Tear away (also could use cutaway or thin batting)
- (2) 5″x5″ Cotton (also could use Marine Vinyl, Denim, canvas, or material of choice)
- (2) 5″x5″ Iron on Fusible web (used Shapeflex by Pellon)
- (2) Snaps (used size 20 from Kam Snaps)
Fuse the interfacing to the wrong side of the cotton for additional stiffness.
Place back and front centered within width of hoop. Tape to secure
Insert new needle. Wind matching bobbin with embroidery thread. Thread machine. Insert hoop into machine and sew flower design.
Remove hoop from machine and remove materials from hoop. Clip loose and jump threads.
Prepare snaps and snap tool. Insert snap tool into base.
Fold Flower earbud case in half aligning the pedal edges. Find center of ONE pedal section and use awl to poke through all layers.
Position snaps over hole on front and back.
Place snap cap on lower portion of snap tool. Press handle down to set snap.
Repeat snap on other side.
Fold case closed and snap. With scissors, snip a slit into the center of the flower, this will hold the plug tip.
Tip: Because pedals are on bias there will be little fraying on cotton materials. If NO Fraying is desired, use fray check or a seam sealant along all raw edges, including the center snip.
Insert plug tip from back to front through center slit. Wrap cord and earbuds around center of case on opposite side of snaps.
Close case to secure earbuds from falling out. When you are ready to use earbuds on your cell phone or other electronic devices, simply unwrap the cord, leaving the plug tip in the center slit and floating through the cord. Make lots and lots of these and please be sure to share this post with your stitching friends.
