~Braid Template by Kate Colleran – Does this Notion REALLY work?~
Do you quilt, sew, craft? Have you ever wanted to learn the secret of creating perfect braid quilts and accents? For years, it has been a beautiful but challenging technique. Now, even the novice can create beautiful braid projects just by using this clever Braid Template. Let’s learn how.
Who invented the Braid Template?
The very talented Kate Colleran, owner of Kate Colleran Designs and her pattern company, Seams Like a Dream. She is a pattern designer, an author and a Craftsy class instructor, see her class below.
She wrote a book titled, Smash your PreCut Stash. Where inside where some great projects along with a Braided quilt.
At this time she had yet developed the Braid Template and she was determined to invent a tool, notion, ruler…TEMPLATE which would change the way we make Braided projects forever! She did it!
Here are some of the beautiful things you can make.
Why was it invented?
Kate loves the braided look in her quilts, purses and table runners very much. The look is amazing but the process is time consuming and a lot of math is required. After her book was published she decided there had to be another way. That is when she invented the Braid Template.
How do you use the Braid Template?
At first glance the temple reminds me of a mitering tool. Upon closer examination, there are lots of measurements. First thing – choose your braid strip width. Let’s say 2″ wide. Next you choose your braid strip length, let’s say 7″. All of Kate’s patterns will explain in detail which size to cut so it is just a mater of following directions. Once you have all your strips cut, you will then lay them in place in an aesthetically pleasing pattern. Sew the lower short end to the next strip up longer edge and press. To continue adding strips you will add the next strip above, the length to the one below. For complete instructions, the Braid Template comes with a tri-fold printed instruction sheet or you can watch the video below.
What else can you do with the Braid Template?
It’s always exciting when you can do more than one thing with a tool, notion or template. In this case, in addition to creating amazing Braid strips, you can also create Parallelograms. You will simple choose the width and cut away! Pretty simple.
Where can you get a Braid Template?
The Braid Template is sold in quilt shops and sewing machine shops world wide, you can also buy direct from the designer, Kate Colleran on her website. If your local shop doesn’t carry them, tell them to watch the video below and order some today!
